Electrical Project Planning & Design

Concept, basic and detailed electrical design supported by calculations, studies and specifications, with the specified equipment supplied by Powersense.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense is both a supplier and an engineering office. We design low- and medium-voltage installations and supply the switchgear, transformers, generators, cables, luminaires and automation equipment that we specify, so the drawings, calculations and bill of quantities match what is delivered to site.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Concept design

The supply concept, voltage levels, redundancy and space for substations and technical rooms are defined from the building brief and agreed with the client and the architect.

DeliverableDesign brief, preliminary single-line diagram, room schedule
  2. 02

    Basic design and load calculations

Installed and demand loads, diversity, transformer and generator ratings and power-factor correction are calculated from the load schedule.

DeliverableLoad schedule, transformer and generator sizing note
  3. 03

    Short-circuit and selectivity studies

Fault levels are calculated at every board to IEC 60909, and breaking capacities and discrimination between protective devices are verified to IEC 60947-2.

DeliverableFault-level report, selectivity tables, protection settings
  4. 04

    Cables, earthing and lightning protection

Cross-sections follow current-carrying capacity, grouping and voltage drop (IEC 60364-5-52). Earthing and bonding follow IEC 60364-5-54 and lightning protection follows an IEC 62305 risk assessment.

DeliverableCable schedule, earthing layout, lightning-risk assessment
  5. 05

    Detailed design

Single-line and schematic diagrams, layouts and cable routes are drawn, and lighting is calculated in DIALux, with levels taken from EN 12464-1.

DeliverableSingle-line diagrams, layouts, schematics, lighting calculation
  6. 06

    Specifications, BOQ and as-built documents

Technical specifications and a priced bill of quantities are issued for approval and tender. After construction, as-built documents record the installation as built.

DeliverableSpecifications, bill of quantities, as-built drawings

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • IEC 60364-1Low-voltage electrical installations: fundamental principles, assessment of general characteristics and definitions.
  • IEC 60364-5-52Selection and erection of wiring systems: current-carrying capacity, installation methods and voltage drop.
  • IEC 60909-0Short-circuit currents in three-phase AC systems: calculation of initial, peak and breaking currents.
  • IEC 60947-2Low-voltage circuit-breakers: ratings, breaking capacity, tripping characteristics and selectivity.
  • IEC 60364-5-54Earthing arrangements and protective conductors: earth electrodes, PE conductors and equipotential bonding.
  • IEC 62305Lightning protection: risk management, protection of structures and of internal electrical systems.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

Which software is used for the calculations and drawings?

Typical tools are DIALux for lighting, ETAP or Ecodial-type software for load-flow and short-circuit studies, and AutoCAD or EPLAN for drawings. Tools are chosen per project; naming them does not imply a certification or partnership.

What do you need to start a design?

Architectural plans, a load or equipment list, the grid operator's connection conditions and any client standards. Missing data is recorded as stated assumptions in the design brief.
