KNX Building Automation

KNX and DALI lighting, blinds, HVAC and access control on one open building bus, designed, programmed and commissioned by Powersense.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense supplies KNX actuators, sensors, touch panels, gateways and power supplies, and engineers the installation: topology, group-address structure, scenes, schedules, programming in ETS and commissioning.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Functional requirements

Rooms, functions and user needs are listed: lighting, blinds, HVAC, presence, access and energy visualisation.

    DeliverableFunctional specification
  2. 02

    Topology and power supply

Lines, areas, couplers and bus power supplies are dimensioned from the device count and current consumption.

    DeliverableTopology drawing
  3. 03

    Device and board design

Actuators, sensors and gateways are selected, and distribution board layouts are drawn.

    DeliverableDevice schedule, board layout
  4. 04

    Group addresses and logic

Group-address structure, scenes, schedules, presence and daylight logic are defined before programming starts.

    DeliverableGroup-address list, logic description
  5. 05

    Programming and gateways

Devices are programmed in ETS, with gateways to DALI, BACnet or Modbus where the integration needs them.

    DeliverableETS project, gateway configuration
  6. 06

    Commissioning and handover

Functions are tested room by room, users are trained, energy visualisation is set up and the project file is archived.

    DeliverableTest protocol, ETS project archive

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • ISO/IEC 14543-3Home and building electronic systems: the KNX communication protocol.
  • EN 50090Home and building electronic systems (HBES): general requirements, installation and EMC.
  • IEC 62386DALI, the digital addressable lighting interface: communication, control gear and control devices.
  • ISO 52120-1Energy performance of buildings: contribution of building automation, controls and technical building management.
  • ISO 16484-3Building automation and control systems: functions.
  • EN 12464-1Lighting of indoor workplaces: illuminance, uniformity, glare (UGR) and colour rendering.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

Why KNX instead of a proprietary system?

KNX is an open standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3), so certified devices from different manufacturers work on one bus and one engineering tool. Service and extension are not tied to a single supplier.

Does KNX replace DALI?

No. DALI controls luminaires and drivers within a room. KNX integrates lighting with blinds, climate and access across the building, linked by a gateway.
