Power, Control & Data Cables

Power, control, signal and data cables specified by current, route, environment and reaction to fire.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense supplies installation, LV, MV and HV power cables, underground, control, fibre-optic and copper data cables, and engineers the selection: cross-section, voltage drop, short-circuit withstand and fire performance for each circuit.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Circuit data

Load current, voltage, length, installation method and ambient temperature are recorded for each circuit.

    DeliverableCircuit list
  2. 02

    Current-carrying capacity

Cross-sections are chosen with correction factors for grouping and temperature (IEC 60364-5-52 and IEC 60287).

    DeliverableCable schedule
  3. 03

    Voltage drop and fault withstand

Voltage drop is kept within limits, and the thermal withstand of conductor and screen is checked against the clearing time of the protection.

    DeliverableVoltage-drop and thermal check
  4. 04

    Fire performance

Reaction to fire (Euroclass, EN 50575) and flame propagation of bunched cables (IEC 60332-3) are matched to the building requirement, with halogen-free sheaths where needed.

    DeliverableCable-type specification
  5. 05

    Environment and route

Sheath and construction are chosen for soil, UV, water, mechanical load or temperature, and routes are coordinated with trays and other services.

    DeliverableRoute and tray plan
  6. 06

    Termination and testing

Terminations, labelling and insulation and continuity tests are completed, with certification of fibre and copper data links where applicable.

    DeliverableTest records, labelled schedule

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • IEC 60364-5-52Selection and erection of wiring systems: current-carrying capacity, installation methods and voltage drop.
  • IEC 60287-1-1Electric cables: calculation of current rating, equations for steady-state operation.
  • IEC 60502-1Power cables with extruded insulation: requirements for rated voltages of 1 kV and 3 kV.
  • IEC 60228Conductors of insulated cables: classes and nominal cross-sections.
  • EN 50575Power, control and communication cables: reaction to fire classification for construction products.
  • IEC 60332-3Tests on electric cables under fire conditions: vertical flame spread of bunched cables.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

What does LSZH mean?

Low smoke, zero halogen. The sheath limits smoke density and corrosive gases in a fire, which keeps escape routes visible and reduces damage to equipment.

Why is each cable calculated instead of taken from a table?

Correction factors for grouping, temperature and installation method can change the permitted current considerably. Each circuit is calculated, including voltage drop and short-circuit withstand.
