Low-Voltage Switchgear & Protection

Circuit breakers, contactors, motor starters, power-factor correction and metering, selected as one coordinated low-voltage protection system.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense supplies air, moulded-case and miniature circuit breakers, residual-current devices, contactors, drives and measuring equipment, and engineers their coordination: fault levels, selectivity, power-factor correction and monitoring, so that protection behaves as one system.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Fault-level and load data

The prospective short-circuit current at each board is taken from the network study (IEC 60909), together with load and diversity data.

    DeliverableFault-level table, load schedule
  2. 02

    Breaker and device selection

Rated current, breaking capacity (Icu and Ics), utilisation category and trip curves are selected to IEC 60947-2 and IEC 60947-4-1.

    DeliverableDevice schedule
  3. 03

    Selectivity and back-up protection

Discrimination between upstream and downstream devices is verified from manufacturer tables or time-current curves, and back-up protection is applied where it is used.

    DeliverableSelectivity matrix, settings list
  4. 04

    Earth-fault and shock protection

Residual-current devices and automatic disconnection of supply are verified against fault-loop impedance and disconnection times (IEC 60364-4-41).

    DeliverableDisconnection-time check
  5. 05

    Power-factor correction

Capacitor banks and controllers are sized from measured demand, with detuned reactors or filters where harmonics are present.

    DeliverableCompensation sizing sheet
  6. 06

    Metering and monitoring

Network analysers and communicating devices are specified to report current, power, power factor and harmonics to the SCADA or BMS.

    DeliverableMetering schedule, communications list

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • IEC 60947-2Low-voltage circuit-breakers: ratings, breaking capacity, tripping characteristics and selectivity.
  • IEC 60947-4-1Electromechanical contactors and motor starters.
  • IEC 60947-3Switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse-combination units.
  • IEC 61439-1Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies: general rules and design verification.
  • IEC 60364-4-41Protection against electric shock: basic and fault protection, and automatic disconnection of supply.
  • IEC 60909-0Short-circuit currents in three-phase AC systems: calculation of initial, peak and breaking currents.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

What is the difference between Icu and Ics?

Icu is the ultimate breaking capacity and Ics is the service breaking capacity, stated as a percentage of Icu. After breaking a fault up to Ics, the breaker remains fit for service. Both are compared with the prospective fault level.

Do soft starters save energy?

No. A soft starter limits starting current and mechanical shock. Energy savings on pumps and fans come from AC drives that match motor speed to demand.
