Medium-Voltage Switchgear & Transformers

Power and distribution transformers, MV switchgear and prefabricated substations, rated for load, fault level and the grid operator's connection terms.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense supplies power transformers from 2,500 to 63,000 kVA, distribution transformers from 10 to 2,500 kVA, dry-type transformers up to 630 kVA, MV switchgear and concrete kiosks, and engineers the connection: rating, fault level, protection and earthing.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Connection terms and load profile

Grid operator requirements, maximum demand, growth allowance and voltage level are collected and documented.

    DeliverableConnection data sheet
  2. 02

    Transformer rating

Power rating, vector group, impedance, losses and cooling are selected under IEC 60076-1, and the unit is checked for short-circuit withstand.

    DeliverableTransformer specification
  3. 03

    Switchgear technology

GIS, AIS or metal-clad switchgear to IEC 62271-200 is selected with vacuum or SF6 breakers (IEC 62271-100), rated for the busbar fault level.

    DeliverableSwitchgear specification, single-line diagram
  4. 04

    Protection and earthing

Relay settings, fuses, instrument transformers and the earthing system are designed for installations above 1 kV (IEC 61936-1, EN 50522).

    DeliverableProtection settings, earthing design
  5. 05

    Substation layout

Room or kiosk dimensions, ventilation, cable entries and clearances are defined, with prefabricated substations to IEC 62271-202 where used.

    DeliverableLayout drawing, foundation requirements
  6. 06

    Factory tests and energisation

Routine tests are witnessed or reviewed, and delivery, installation and commissioning checks are completed before energisation.

    DeliverableTest reports, commissioning record

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • IEC 60076-1Power transformers: general requirements, ratings, temperature rise and tests.
  • IEC 60076-11Dry-type power transformers: requirements and tests.
  • IEC 62271-200AC metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to 52 kV.
  • IEC 62271-100High-voltage alternating-current circuit-breakers.
  • IEC 62271-202High-voltage/low-voltage prefabricated substations.
  • IEC 61936-1Power installations exceeding 1 kV AC: common rules for design and erection.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

Should we choose GIS or AIS switchgear?

GIS needs the least floor area and is sealed against dust and humidity. AIS and metal-clad designs suit rooms with space for clearances and routine access. The choice follows space, environment and budget.

Why choose a dry-type transformer?

A dry-type unit contains no liquid dielectric, which suits indoor sites and buildings with stricter fire-safety requirements. In our range, dry-type transformers are available up to 630 kVA.
