Low-Voltage Switchboards & Control Panels

Low-voltage switchboards and control panels, designed and verified to IEC 61439, built and wired by Powersense with the devices supplied.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense supplies the breakers, contactors, drives, busbars and meters, and builds them into verified assemblies. Design, calculation, manufacture, routine testing and commissioning stay with one team, so the panel matches the single-line diagram and the network study.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Single-line diagram and load list

Incomers, feeders, motor starters and compensation are defined from the load list, the simultaneous demand and the planned expansion.

    DeliverableApproved single-line diagram, load schedule
  2. 02

    Short-circuit and selectivity check

The prospective fault level is calculated to IEC 60909, and breaker ratings and discrimination limits are verified to IEC 60947-2.

    DeliverableFault-level and selectivity report
  3. 03

    Assembly design verification

Temperature rise, short-circuit withstand, dielectric properties and degree of protection are verified by test, calculation or design rules under IEC 61439-1 and -2.

    DeliverableDesign verification file
  4. 04

    Enclosure, busbar and layout design

Busbars, enclosure, form of internal separation (Form 1 to 4b) and ventilation are dimensioned, and the layout is agreed before manufacture.

DeliverableGeneral arrangement drawing, busbar and enclosure calculation
  5. 05

    Manufacture and routine verification

Assembly, wiring and labelling follow the approved drawings. Routine verification then covers inspection, dielectric testing and functional checks.

DeliverableRoutine test report, labelled wiring schedule
  6. 06

    Installation, commissioning and handover

Delivery, positioning, termination, functional tests and protection settings are completed on site, and as-built drawings are supplied.

    DeliverableCommissioning record, as-built documents

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • IEC 61439-1Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies: general rules and design verification.
  • IEC 61439-2Power switchgear and controlgear assemblies: requirements for main and distribution boards.
  • IEC 60947-2Low-voltage circuit-breakers: ratings, breaking capacity, tripping characteristics and selectivity.
  • IEC 60909-0Short-circuit currents in three-phase AC systems: calculation of initial, peak and breaking currents.
  • IEC/TR 61641Enclosed low-voltage assemblies: guide for testing under conditions of arcing due to an internal fault.
  • EN 50110-1Operation of electrical installations: safe working procedures.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

What is the difference between Icw and Ipk?

Icw is the rated short-time withstand current, given as an r.m.s. value for a stated duration. Ipk is the rated peak withstand current. Both must be at least equal to the prospective fault level at the installation point.

What do the forms of internal separation mean?

IEC 61439-2 defines Forms 1 to 4b. Higher forms place busbars, functional units and terminals in separate compartments so that one feeder can be worked on more safely. The form is agreed per project and is not an arc-fault rating.
