HVAC & Smoke-Control Engineering

Heat-load, airflow and smoke-control calculations, CFD simulation, ventilation control and commissioning, with fans and control panels supplied by Powersense.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense supplies fans, smoke-extraction units and control panels, and engineers the system they serve: duty calculation, CFD verification, control scenarios and measured commissioning. Heat-pump and VRF concepts are developed as part of the mechanical design.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Design criteria and heat load

Indoor conditions, occupancy and ventilation rates follow EN 16798-1 or ASHRAE 62.1, and cooling and heating loads are calculated for each zone.

    DeliverableDesign criteria sheet, heat-load summary
  2. 02

    Airflow and duty point

Airflow, duct pressure loss and fan duty point are calculated, with filter loading and noise limits taken into account.

    DeliverableDuct calculation, fan selection sheet
  3. 03

    Smoke and heat control concept

Smoke extraction, make-up air and escape-route protection are defined to the EN 12101 series and the fire-safety concept of the building.

    DeliverableSmoke-control concept, scenario matrix
  4. 04

    CFD simulation

Airflow and smoke movement are simulated in the real geometry to check jet-fan positions, dead zones and smoke dilution.

DeliverableCFD report with velocity and temperature plots
  5. 05

    Control and automation

Detector signals, fan starters and dampers are integrated in a control panel that runs the ventilation scenarios and interfaces with the BMS.

DeliverableControl narrative, panel drawings, I/O list
  6. 06

    Installation support and commissioning

Airflow is measured and balanced against the design, and each scenario is tested together with the fire alarm and recorded.

    DeliverableCommissioning report with measured values

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • EN 16798-1Energy performance of buildings: indoor environmental input parameters for ventilation design.
  • ASHRAE 62.1Ventilation and acceptable indoor air quality: minimum outdoor-air rates.
  • EN 12101-3Smoke and heat control systems: specification for powered smoke and heat exhaust ventilators.
  • EN 12101-6Smoke and heat control systems: pressure differential systems (kits) for escape routes.
  • ISO 13350Fans: performance testing of jet fans.
  • EN 378-1Refrigerating systems and heat pumps: safety and environmental requirements.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

Why simulate with CFD?

Hand calculations give volumes and pressures. CFD shows where air and smoke actually travel, for example around columns and beams, so jet-fan positions can be corrected before installation.

Do you design heat-pump and VRF systems?

Yes, as concepts within the mechanical design: load calculation, system selection, refrigerant safety to EN 378 and control integration. Equipment other than fans is sourced on request.
