Lighting Design

Concept, calculation and luminaire schedules for interior, exterior and road lighting, with ALKAN® luminaires supplied by Powersense.

01Overview

Supply and engineering from one team

Powersense designs the lighting and supplies the luminaires it specifies. Targets come from EN 12464-1, EN 12464-2, EN 13201 or EN 12193, calculations are carried out in DIALux, and the luminaire schedule matches what we deliver.

02Scope and process

Engineering scope and deliverables

  1. 01

    Brief and site data

Use, tasks, daylight, mounting heights, finishes and maintenance needs are recorded from plans and survey.

    DeliverableLighting brief
  2. 02

    Target values

Maintained illuminance, uniformity, glare rating (UGR) and colour rendering are set from the applicable standard.

    DeliverableCriteria table
  3. 03

    Concept and luminaire selection

Light distribution, colour temperature and luminaire families are selected, with mood studies and 3D views where required.

    DeliverableConcept report
  4. 04

    Photometric calculation

Illuminance, uniformity, glare and energy density are calculated in DIALux evo, and emergency lighting is checked to EN 1838.

    DeliverableCalculation report, isolux plots
  5. 05

    Layouts, schedules and control

Luminaire layouts, circuiting, schedules and the control strategy (DALI-2, KNX or wireless) are produced.

DeliverableLayout drawings, luminaire schedule, control concept
  6. 06

    Specification and BOQ

The technical specification, bill of quantities and installation notes are issued for tender and construction.

03Standards

International standards applied

These standards form the technical basis for design and equipment selection. The exact set is confirmed for each project against the national regulations in force.

  • EN 12464-1Lighting of indoor workplaces: illuminance, uniformity, glare (UGR) and colour rendering.
  • EN 12464-2Lighting of outdoor workplaces: illuminance, uniformity and glare limits.
  • EN 13201-2Road lighting: performance requirements for lighting classes.
  • EN 12193Sports lighting: illuminance and uniformity requirements for sports areas.
  • EN 1838Emergency lighting: escape-route illuminance and duration of operation.
  • EN 15193-1Energy performance of buildings: energy requirements for lighting and the LENI indicator.

06Technical notes

Technical notes and FAQ

What does a lighting calculation include?

Maintained illuminance and uniformity on the task area, glare (UGR or threshold increment), energy use and, for emergency lighting, the levels along escape routes.

Can you design with luminaires from other manufacturers?

Designs are based on the ALKAN® luminaires we supply. Other luminaires can be modelled when the manufacturer provides LDT or IES photometric files.
